Dear Mats
I am fully aware that my opinion matters less to Cliff Fletcher than the dirt on the bottom of Richard Peddie's shoe. However, I must be loyal and say it nonetheless, addressing the person who it probably concerns more than anyone else: Don't Go Mats.I mean, I'll get used to it if leaving is better for you, but it's hard to say if you leaving is better for the Leafs. (I say this, of course, in spite of all the people saying it would be the solution to their problem. I honestly wonder which Leafs team they are watching if they think anyone but you has been leading this team on the ice, or I suspect in the dressing room). I have my favourite scapegoat for the Leafs problems, but it is too late to fix the havoc wreaked by that person (and/or persons I should maybe say).
You have been compared to Ryan Smyth in a few recent media reports. I think that is true in a couple of respects: the trade would be big, if not shocking and you are the heart of this Leafs team.
I would be sad to see you go because I think you do and have done an admirable job both playing in Toronto and dealing with its ferocious media and fan base over your 14 years with the team. As a journalist myself, I appreciate the poise with which you have dealt with a very demanding gaggle of reporters over the years.
If it is what you want (and you are afraid to say it or do it) and it is best for you, go where you have a chance at winning the Cup. You deserve it. But if Toronto still has appeal for you and you do have the opportunity to stay, then I say again Mats: Don't Go.
**PS: Shame on you Peddie (and anyone else who was involved) for being so cruel to Ferguson. It's hard to say I ever liked the man as the Leafs GM, but that doesn't stop him from being a human being. That means he deserves respect.

Just to add something Paul Maurice said recently:
"I think he's in a great situation because every day he wakes up, he's Mats Sundin. That's a pretty good life."
Hilarious.
