Journalism Students Who Don't Like Journalism
If you don't want to be in journalism, why are you here? I suppose there is always a benefit to learning more and having a journalism degree can open doors in many fields. So can a mass communications degree. But at the same time, why put yourself through such a rigorous, insanity-provoking program if you're in third year and you are still "unsure" whether journalism is for you?
It just seems like unnecessary punishment to me. Don't get me wrong, I think Carleton has an excellent journalism program and I would not want to study my chosen profession anywhere else. It is a very demanding workload though. As are most post-secondary programs. My feelings on that are well-known and seem to matter little to the people who could change something. That, however, is probably a post for another day.
I guess it is different for me. To some, taking two years off was a precious waste of time and put in serious doubt the probability I would return at all. I think I've benefited from it. I know now that I want to be here and if at anytime in the next year I decide journalism will not fulfill my ultimate goals for this life, then I will leave and pursue my education in another subject area. Those two years gave me the direction and confidence to be able to say that.
For now, journalism seems to be a good fit.
